Students’ and teachers’ results in the IEA International Civic and Citizenship Education Studies in Flanders (Belgium): Implications for cross-curricular approaches to civic education.

Abstract

België (Vlaanderen) nam deel aan de ICCS (International Civic and Citizenship Education Study) van de IEA in 2009 en 2016. Gedurende deze periode van zeven jaar is de Vlaamse onderwijsaanpak rond burgerschapseducatie geëvolueerd, en onderzoek naar de impact van burgerschapseducatie op school heeft een rol gespeeld bij het sturen van hervormingen. In dit hoofdstuk geven we een kort overzicht van de ontwikkeling van burgerschapseducatie in Vlaanderen. Daarnaast bespreken we onderzoek dat dit proces heeft gemonitord en begeleid. In deze bespreking richten we ons voornamelijk op de houding van leerlingen tegenover immigranten en op de opvattingen van leerkrachten over de behoeften in burgerschapsgerelateerd onderwijs.

Belgium (Flanders) partcipated in IEA’s Internatonal Civic and Citzenship Educaton Study (ICCS) 2009 and 2016. During that period of seven years, the Flemish educatonal approach to civic and citzenship educaton evolved, and research into the impact of civic and citzenship educaton at school played a role in guiding reforms. In this chapter, we give a short overview of the development of civic and citzenship educaton in Flanders. Furthermore, we discuss research that has monitored and guided this process. In this discussion, we mainly focus on students’ attudes toward immigrants and on teachers’ beliefs about needs in civic and citzenship-related teaching.
