Neighborhood and Identity: An Explorative Study of the Local and Ethnic Identities of Young Ethnic Minorities in Belgium.

Abstract

Deze kwalitatieve studie werd uitgevoerd in verschillende buurten in Gent, en had het doel om de lokale gehechtheid van jonge, etnische minderheden en hoe deze gehechtheid gerelateerd is aan etnische identiteit te onderzoeken. Analyses van de verhalen van jonge mensen tonen aan dat etnische en lokale identiteiten elkaar niet uitsluiten, maar een complexe interactie vertonen. Het eerste, onderscheidbare verhaal wordt gekenmerkt door het uiten van een sterke buurt-identiteit naast positieve attitudes naar anderen. Een tweede verhaal bevat de uiting van sterke etnische identiteit in de vorm van banden met kleine, lokale etnische gemeenschappen, gecombineerd met negatieve attitudes naar andere buurtbewoners. Een derde verhaal wordt gekenmerkt door de vertoning van een sterke anti-buurt identiteit en een ontkoppeling van de etnische identiteit en de lokale omgeving, als een copingstrategie voor de slechte reputatie van de buurt.

In this paper, a qualitative study is conducted in different neighborhoods in the Belgian city of Ghent to investigate the local attachments of young ethnic minorities and how these are related to ethnic identities. Analysis of the narratives of the young people shows that ethnic and local identities do not have to be mutually exclusive but are in a complex interaction. The first narrative distinguished is characterized by the expression of a strong neighborhood identity along with positive attitudes toward others. A second narrative contains the expression of a strong ethnic identity in the form of ties with a small local ethnic community, accompanied with negative attitudes toward other inhabitants.
