The Impact of Societal Vulnerability and Violent Values on Self-Control in a Belgium Sample of Youth: A Gender Comparison.

Abstract

Het huidige onderzoek draagt bij aan het onderzoek naar zelfbeheersing bij adolescenten door na te gaan hoe zelfbeheersing wordt beïnvloed door maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheid en gewelddadige waarden en door te onderzoeken hoe variant deze relatie is voor jongens en meisjes. De gegevens van het Belgian International Self-Report Delinquency Study (ISRD-2) werden gebruikt om te beoordelen in hoeverre positieve attitudes ten opzichte van geweld kunnen worden gezien als intermediaire factor in de relatie tussen maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheid en zelfbeheersing. De bevindingen suggereren dat gewelddadige waarden de relatie tussen maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheid en zelfbeheersing mediëren. Ondanks de resultaten die wijzen op een hogere zelfbeheersing bij vrouwen, kwam naar boven dat de relatie tussen maatschappelijke kwetsbaarheid en zelfbeheersing bij jongens en meisjes bij het uitvoeren van de analyses afzonderlijk naar geslacht vergelijkbaar was. Er wordt besloten dat sociaal kwetsbare jongens en meisjes in gelijke mate worden beïnvloed door het intermediaire mechanisme van gewelddadige waarden.

The present study contributes to the study of self-control among adolescents by testing how selfcontrol is affected by societal vulnerability and violent values and by investigating how (in)variant this relationship is for boys and girls. The Belgian International Self-Report Delinquency Study (ISRD-2) data were used to assess to what extent positive attitudes toward violence can be seen as mediators in the relationship between societal vulnerability and self-control. The findings suggest that violent values mediate the relationship between societal vulnerability and self-control. Despite results indicating higher self-control among females, when conducting the analyses separately by gender, we found that the relationship between societal vulnerability and self-control was very similar for boys and girls. It is concluded that societally vulnerable boys and girls are equally affected by the intermediate mechanism of violent values.
